I’ve been wanting to tackle this side table project for awhile but, quite honestly, I was nervous and a little scared to try it.
I was afraid it wouldn’t turn out and wouldn’t look good so I have been putting it off.
Then a few of my blogging friends started talking about putting together another Rock Your Knock-off tour — you know the one…the one where we all make our own version of something we love.
I think it’s such a fun idea because I think we all see things we love at our favorite stores or boutiques that are often too expensive or seem easy to make ourselves. That’s what this tour is all about — several bloggers using an inspiration piece and knocking it off so we can (hopefully) inspire you. (You can see all of the projects by clicking the links at the end of this post.)
Well, this time for my knock-off, I decided to tackle the project I was nervous about and I decided it was time to just woman up and throw caution to the wind!
These two dressers hand painted by Miss Mustard Seed were my inspiration:
I pinned these ages ago and I have always thought about attempting hand-painting a piece of furniture. Specifically, this little scalloped side table I found on Craig’s List. This is what it looked like a few years ago (before blogging) when we first made it over using decoupage for my daughter’s room:
It got another makeover when my daughter told me it was too “little girl” for her and she wanted it to be blue. So, I removed the decoupage and we painted it bright aqua as per her wishes.
Awhile back, the table came out of her room and I brought it in to my master bedroom. I painted it using Annie Sloan’s Cocoa and finished it with clear wax.
But it seemed so drab — it needed embellishment. Enter, Miss Mustard Seed’s hand-painted furniture inspiration.
Thanks to the Rock Your Knock Off tour, I decided to go for it.
I sketched out my design with chalk and got moving with some craft paint.
I did a similar pattern as my inspiration piece, but not exactly.
Here is the end result:
I have tried three variations of knobs on it so far:
My daughter likes the blue ones and I’m just not sure what I think. The brass ones in the middle are original to the table, but they need to be polished. The others are new and I haven’t settled on anything.
In fact, I’m not sure I’m in love with this piece. As much as I love Miss Mustard Seed’s inspiration pieces, the jury is still out for me on this one. I think it might be too busy for me. But, I’m going to live with it for awhile like this and see how it goes.
The beauty of this project is that I can simply paint over it if I decide I don’t like it. There is no long-term commitment — so I’m really glad I gave this a try! Nothing ventured nothing gained.
I hope you’ll click on the picture links below to see what my friends are knocking off!

I agree with your daughter! Love the blue knobs! These cute chests give me inspiration!
I love the blue knobs! I think you did a great job embellishing it.
I like the white knobs!!!
LOVE this, I am dying to paint something in this style!
This turned out lovely, Julie! The white knobs are my favorite. I’ve always wanted to give this a try too! XO
I love it and the best part you can change the knobs out to match whatever you place on top. Thank you for the inspiration.
Julie, You did such a fabulous job on this! I have always admired your inspiration photos that you shared and have wanted to try as well, but too nervous. Yours turned out beautifully! I love the detail and the blue knobs get my vote, such a pretty pop of color.
I think you made the piece special! If I feel a pattern is too busy for my eye, I usually apply a wax or background wash over the pattern to help it mellow. I like the white knobs if you want to be more subtle. Great job!
It’s lovely! Such talent I have always wanted to try this technique too, you have definitely inspired me!

Julie,
I love how your piece turned out. It looks great and I love the color. I have used cococa and its one of my favorite color. Great inspiration.
Beautiful job Julie!…I cannot decide which knobs I would choose…love the blue for that great pop of color and yet love the white as it blends so well and does not compete with the design of the table….
This is gorgeous, Julie! Certainly not something you see everyday. As far as the handles, I like the white and the blue!
Love your knock off! I found your post thru mms. You did a great job on your piece, love the white knobs.
