My husband celebrated his 50th birthday last week. To celebrate, we held a small party with a few friends and I drew a birthday sign on a large chalk board to wish him a happy birthday.
As I was writing on the board, my daughter told me she thought chalkboard writing is my specialty. I laughed a little at the thought, but then I decided that she might be right because I love to draw and write on chalk boards. It makes me re-live my youth a little because art was always my favorite subject.
It only stands to reason, then, that I was all in when chalk boards came in to vogue.
After we remodeled our kitchen last year, I re-purposed a couple of our old cabinet doors and turned them in to chalk boards (you can read about it here).
Now that Fall is almost here, I was trying to come up with something that would welcome the season while making my home feel cozy and inviting. So, I decided to turn one of the small ones in to a fall “wreath” of sorts to create some re-purposed fall décor:
I drilled a couple of holes at the top and threaded checked ribbon through them to serve as a hanger. Then I added the words, “hello fall” with chalk ink pen and hot glued a berry garland in a loose circle.
I finished it off by hot-gluing a few fall leaves for a little “oomp” and color.
This project is so simple and, best of all, you don’t need to have an old cabinet door lying around to make this sign.
You could use an old board or one of those pre-cut and unfinished wood signs from the craft store. Whatever you use, just add a little chalk board paint and you’re in business.
As for the writing part, I’ve got you covered. Follow this simple tutorial.

I too am a huge fan of scribbling on chalkboards, but I get frustrated with regular chalk because it can be difficult to work with. If you want to create looks like this, I suggest using a chalk pencil or marker. They’re easy to wipe away if you make a mistake, but they’re also much easier to use than traditional chalk! Thanks for sharing this cute sign!

I saw your board and instantly fell in love! The next day I was helping a friend clean-out and liquidate her aunt’s house —and lo, and behold!—there were TWO boards just like yours that would be perfect for me to create a chalkboard like yours! What’s funny is…they aren’t cabinet doors. In fact we can’t figure out what they were! (they have a piece of slanted wood on the back!) Nonetheless, I LOVE my boards!!! Thanks for posting!!

Thanks so much for your sweet comment, Ann! How lucky that you were able to find the perfect thing to make your own chalkboard “wreath”! Have fun and good luck! 🙂
