I have a hard time getting my house back in shape after the holidays. Even if my house is clean and organized and all of the Christmas boxes are put away, I inevitably have some unfinished “holes” in my decor.
That’s because it all looks so blah to me after Christmas and I feel the need to freshen things up a bit. Does this happen to you, too?
I still have a few holes here and there but I did tackle my foyer table the other day. I added a little color with a new plate (a Christmas gift) and some faux greenery.
I found this really cool big faux succulent stem at Hobby Lobby and decided to try it in my urn for something really different. It’s the perfect 5-minute decor project and it adds a fun Texas farmhouse feel, I think.
I love little projects like this one because it’s so easy, it’s low-cost, it takes just a few minutes and it looks great when it’s done!
First, I helped secure the stem by filling my urn with crumpled newspaper to fill the empty space in the pot instead of using floral foam. It’s no-cost and it effectively fills all the space while giving the stem a little lift and support so it doesn’t just rest on the edges of the urn.
I left a little space in the middle to make room for the succulent stem. Then I placed the stem in the newspaper and filled the edges with Spanish moss to cover the newspaper and secure it just a little more.
The succulent leaves on this stem can be manipulated and arranged so I was able to fuss with it a little before placing it and when it was done.
I love the look of the succulent and best of all it is NO maintenance! It’s a fresh change from the lavender I had in it before and with my blue and white accents I think the green is the perfect addition! I like that it’s different and it gives me that Texas farmhouse look that I adore.
It’s an easy 5-minute decorating idea anyone can do with any type of vessel!

I’ve been using the faux succulents for a number of years now and just love them because the real ones look fake so it’s really hard to tell the difference! When I first started buying them they were really expensive, but now you can even find small ones that look great at the dollar store. Like your vignette a lot.
So true, Teddee — the faux ones almost look better than the real ones! And, the prices are fairly reasonable, especially if you have a 40% off coupon! Have a wonderful day!
Hi Julie,
I’ve been trying to fill in the “holes”, too. I had thought about using succulents, but didn’t want another plant to fuss with. Now that I’ve seen how good your faux succulent looks, I’m going to try one, too. Hobby Lobby here I come!
Thanks for the cute idea! Have a great day.
Cindy
Glad you were inspired, Cindy! I love the no maintenance aspect as well — I don’t have the best of luck with real succulents as I tend to over water them. 🙁 Don’t forget your 40% coupon when you go to Hobby Lobby – lol!
I love your idea. The succulent balances out the beautiful crock. Greenery does liven things up through a dreary winter!
Julie,
The succulents definitely give your home even more of a Texas farmhouse vibe and look great with your new blue plate. The fake succulent looks amazing in your close-up where you can see all the details of the thorny edges. Is the little succulent real or faux?
Judith
Thanks, Judith! The little succulent is faux also. It is from Pottery Barn a year or two ago but I just saw some similar ones at Michaels the other day for a whole lot less!
I love plants, but my kitchen doesn’t have a window. This will work even there!

So very beautiful Julie…love the combination of texture and colors…and you know how much I love that table!…Have a great weekend!

It all looks so pretty and fresh. I have a lot of dark spots in my house and now I am seriously thinking about getting the faux succulents. I especially love the blue plate. I know it was a gift but any idea where it came from or the pattern name?
Hi Susan, Thanks so much! The faux succulents are perfect for dark spots and they really do look surprisingly real! Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about the plate. It was part of a set of four and it doesn’t have anything to identify it on the back. So sorry! 🙁
I forgot to clarify that the set of four includes four different patterned plates — none are the same.
