My husband and I like to look at homes that are for sale. We explore new neighborhoods, new builders and we even take in some open houses for existing homes. Sometimes we fancy moving to a smaller home and want to see what’s out there. Other times we just like to see what kind of homes are being built in our area.
When we drive the family through a new neighborhood my son usually rolls his eyes and says something like, “We’re not going to stop and walk through a house are we?” While my daughter is usually more enthusiastic and says, “Hey, let’s stop and see a house!”
I have a feeling you all are more like my daughter and are enthusiastic about home tours.
Today, I’m inviting you all in to stop and see some houses with me — including mine.
The bHome Summer Open House tour has been going all week long and continues today and through tomorrow.
The bloggers on this tour are amazing and are all on the bHome App with me. I have links to their tours at the bottom of this post as well as details about a wonderful giveaway you won’t want to miss — stay tuned!

Today, I’m inviting you in to see my dining room spruced up for summer.
One of the trends my husband and I have noticed in new homes is that many floor plans are doing away with a formal dining room. While I’m not completely opposed to that concept, I have to say that I really enjoy my formal dining room and we actually use it quite a bit.
We give it a good work out with family and friends throughout the year and especially during holidays. We even like to sit here to each lunch during the winter to enjoy all the sun streaming in through the big window.
I love my dining room and it’s actually one of my favorite rooms in our home.
I have worked very hard to blend my style with my husband’s in this space.
If you have been around here before, you know that I love farmhouse, cottage, traditional and casual living spaces and my husband loves the rustic Texas ranch vibe.
For the longest time I had a hard time blending our two styles. I could never get it to a place where we both liked it.
It all started coming together when I visited his uncle’s ranch a few years ago. I began to see and appreciate where his love of the rugged Texan cowboy life came from and I started to love it too.
Now, I just add those touches in here and there while staying true to my style as well. This way I am bringing in the things we both love and appreciate.
When it comes to adding seasonal touches I just like to add a few things here and there. This summer, I’m loving the floral and citrus accents I added. I also like the split peas I put in the hurricanes to add a little fresh color.
As much as I adore using real flowers, I’ve come to terms with the fact that faux is just easier for my busy life style. I still add the real deal in from time to time, but the no fuss variety is where it’s at for me during this stage of life. And, they make me almost as happy as looking at the real thing.
This time I just set a bunch of flowers in a large tray with no vase. It was a little accidental and I’m finding I really like them that way!
This room makes me feel cozy and happy any time of year.
(You can read more about some of the transformations in my dining room here, here and here.)

and it should, it’s a gorgeous room. that buffalo check always makes my heart pitter patter. i remember the first time i saw the post when you did those chairs. Lovely, even the accident.
Aww, thanks so much Laura! Those checks make my heart flutter, too! 🙂
I so love your dining room Julie…I think I saw it somewhere in blogland (maybe at Savvy S) and that is when I started following you!…You have successfully incorporated the styles that you love with a Texas flair….I remember when I traveled a lot to Texas with my hubby on business, my entertainment was going to the many new developments and going through the models, then taking him back to see the beautiful homes. I love the homes in Texas!…We love seeing Showcase/Designer Homes…We will be traveling to the Southern Living Home in Charlottesville soon..Thanks for the beautiful tour Julie!!
Fantastic tour!
What a charming home filled with personal touches that are sure to make everyone that comes through the door feel welcomed.
I hope you have a fantastic summer!
Cynthia
Love your checked upholstered dining chairs! I like the hurricane glasses with the candles and split peas, and the big bowl with lemon/limes and antlers! You have done a great job blending your “lilacs and longhorns!”

I love open houses too – fun to peek into peoples homes. Your home is gorgeous – love the hanging wine rack – so fun!
You know I love your gorgeous style. You do a phenomenal job blending what you love and what your hubby loves. I bet he loves you for that and it’s a great family home.
Julie, I always enjoy seeing your dining room and I love the summer additions. We don’t use ours unless I’m the host at Thanksgiving or Christmas. If we ever get another home we will most likely not add a dining room.
Julie your dining room is beautiful! I love that it reflects both you and your hubby. The color scheme is so warm and inviting. I can see many meals and holiday’s enjoyed in that space.
Every time I see that buffalo check I just sigh. 🙂 I love the touches of blue too. Thank you so much for joining our tour…relax and enjoy the rest of the summer!

I adore the mix of styles and I think it works perfectly Julie! I think getting rid of a formal dining space is fine if you never use it but sounds like yours get some well loved gatherings! Love it all.

Perhaps in our marriage vows there should be a clause that says “I promise to honour thy’s decorating style” because rarely do we find a soul mate that completely gets our individual style. I love that combining both of your styles has lead to a beautiful room that you can both be very happy in. Your dining room is really beautiful Julie and must be a delight to entertain your family and friends in.
